Hawk on my Soho Window Ledge

Unbelievable. Got up at 4.30am to find a fine Sparrow Hawk sitting on my window sill in central London. I don’t know who was more surprised me or him seeing me in just my pyjama bottoms. He flew off. I thought I could hear the mewing screech of a bird of prey over the last few days but couldn’t believe my ears as its just so urbanised here and I normally see these birds in deep rural areas. Perhaps it has been brought in to scare the pigeons out of Trafalgar Square before the Olympics.

I have seen so many great birds over last 2 weeks and last week watched a fine Green Woodpecker in Regents Park, pecking for ants in the grass, 10 feet in front of me. Brilliant red head. All the tourists and joggers around me were totally oblivious to its presence!
